This was an interesting, yet seemingly controversial psyblog. It discussed how when asked a request in our right ear, we (male or female) are more likely to respond. The theory behind this statement was that language heard through the right ear is interpreted in the left side of the brain-the side more preferentially processing language.
I think to some extent this could be true. When I began reading the article, I didn't really buy into what the author was saying because their study didn't seem very supportive (a person went around and asked people for a "smoke" while at a club. More people said yes when asked in their right ear.) When the blog talked about how some people prefer talking into the phone in their right ear (although more people prefer left) I was able to grasp what the author was trying to say. Personally, I CAN'T talk with the phone on my left ear, so this made more sense to me,
The blog was interesting, but I wouldn't recommend taking the time to read it.

Well i just took the time to read your blog about it. You should say not to read it in the beginning. But anyways they didn't really do a good job testing thier theory because their test kinda sucked. If it was true it would be very interesting. The phone thing I guess now that I think of it a lot of people that talk on the phone do talk on the right side, I know I do.
ReplyDeleteI really like this blog. I find it interesting that people usually prefer talking into the phone through in their left ear, because I too use the right. However, I think that has more to do with the fact that I am right handed. I also like your point about being asked whether they could have a cigarette (and more people said yes in their right ear). I think that is just a coincidence.
ReplyDeleteThat's a really good point Hannah! I tried to talk on the phone with my left ear a couple of times: No luck. It didn't work out very well.. Mostly because then I could barely hear the conversation! But you're right about the study being kind of bogus. I mean either way, asking for stuff at a club is not a very good idea considering it is most likely very loud in there anyways. But it is interesting to think that something as weird as an ear preference can effect whether you respond or not.
